2014 POPCORN!!!!!

Popcorn time is here again and I wanted to share some information about this year’s sale.  Our Troop’s sales goal this year is $15,350.  We sold $14,870 last year with 43 scouts participating.  We have over 100 scouts in the troop right now so this goal is very achievable.  If every scout in the troop participates that breaks down to $153.50 per scout.  For every dollar of popcorn sold, that scout will get 22% put into his scout account to help pay for his future campouts or other outings with the troop.  In addition, if your scout sells at least $200 of popcorn he will earn a voucher that can be used at the Scout Shop.

Important Dates:
The first day for on-line popcorn sales is September 1st.
Popcorn pick-up is September 18th.
The first day to sell door to door is September 20th.
All orders need to be turned in by October 31st.
All monies need to be turned in by December 16th.

First year parents….we do not participate in the prize offerings by Trails End like you probably did in Cub Scouts.

Scout Incentives

There are several incentives this year for the boys to sell popcorn:

Scout Account

For every dollar of popcorn sold each scout will get 22% put into his scout account to help pay for his future campouts or other outings in the troop.  This money will be deposited into the scout accounts after all monies have been collected.  You will be notified when your accounts have been credited.

Scout Shop Voucher

If a scout sells at least $200 of popcorn he will earn a voucher that can be used at the Scout Shop.  The value of his voucher will be as follows:  from $200 to $299 you will earn $10, $300 to $399 you will earn $15, $400 to $499 you will earn $20, etc up through $1500.  At $1500 through $2999 you could either earn a voucher or Monster Jam tickets. At $3,000 through $4,999 you could earn a voucher or an Action Camera.  At $5,000 through $9,999 you could either earn a voucher or a Microsoft Party.

Weekly Prizes

There will be prizes for the scout that turns in the most money at each troop meeting beginning September 30 and running for 4 consecutive weeks.  These prizes will consist of gift certificates to local businesses including a variety of food options.

Troop Top Seller Prizes

Fifth prize is $30

Top Patrol

The ‘Old Goats’ will cook for the patrol that sells the most during a campout in 2015.  I don’t know what the menu will be yet but I guarantee it will include a tasty desert.

How it will work – On-line Sales.

On-line sales can start now.  Simply go to www.trails-end.com and set up an account.  All on-line sales through November 4th  will count toward your total.  Please be sure to sign up as‘TROOP 199’ so you get credit.  We are NOT ‘Pack 199’.  If you have any questions please let me know.

How it will work – Door to Door Sales.

Door to Door selling  begins September 20th.  I have placed our initial popcorn order and will have product on hand as of September 18th.  The first weekend of popcorn sales is also a campout weekend.  If you are not planning to go camping with the troop this weekend and want to sell popcorn please email me and I will meet you behind the Ministry Center to hand out popcorn on Thursday, September 18th.  I can also meet you Sunday, September 21st  after we get back from camping if you want to go out and sell Sunday afternoon.

After that, each Tuesday beginning September 23rd  through October 28th I will be at the trailers behind the Ministry Center ready to hand out popcorn to those who need it.  If you know what popcorn you need please email me by Sunday night so I can order it for you if I do not have it on hand on Tuesday.

You can turn money in to Jim Ruddell at any Troop meeting beginning September 30.  Remember, prizes for top money turn in are only during the first four weeks of the sale beginningSeptember 30th  so turn your money in sooner than later.

I need all orders turned in to my by October 31.  If I need to place a final order, I need to do that by November 4th.  That order will come in later in November and I will get any final product to you when it comes in.

All money needs to be turned in by December 16th  so Top Seller prizes can be awarded before Christmas!!!

Sell…Sell…Sell

As you can see we are providing many incentives to get our scouts to sell popcorn this year.  They can receive as much as 27% of their sales back with their scout shop voucher and deposit into their scout account, weekly prizes, a campout where they don’t have to cook and a chance to win $100.

If you have any questions, please contact me.  My contact information is below.

Opportunities:  Troop 199 Scouts there are 3 big opportunities for us in this email. I challenge you all to attend TWO of the three activities on this list.  Since each one is spread out by a month I want you to consider going to all THREE!!!  St. George Church contacted me via email and told me he asked around Fishers for help and was told by several people that “you want Troop 199 Scouts, they work hard, are organized and look great in uniform”.  Let’s get out into the committee and Do Our Best!

St. George Greek Orthodox Church:
Needs assistance at their festival (10748 E. 116th Street) in Fishers. Parking will be off-site, but nearby at the Fall Creek Community Church located at 10401 E. 116th Street. The hours of the festival are from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday.  If you can help at any time please email me ASAP with the hours you can work and I will get you in touch with the Festival Organizers.

JDRF Walk:
Odds are you know someone whose life is impacted by Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).  Within our own Troop Family there are three young men, Griffin B., Blake J., and Tristan F. who daily manage this life-threatening autoimmune disease.

Facts about this disease:
  • It is not brought on by lifestyle choices – diet, weight, etc.
  • It cannot be prevented and there is no cure
  • It is due to the pancreas stopping insulin production – a hormone required to get energy from food
  • Kids have to stick themselves MANY times a day to check their blood sugar
  • It requires a daily intake of insulin via a POD, injection, etc.
  • A vigilant counting of carbohydrates is a must
  • A parent has to live with the fear of their child not waking up in the morning due to an unexpected change in blood sugar
Saturday, October 4 is the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes at Military Park in downtown Indianapolis.  JDRF, Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research, and they are on the cusp of breakthrough technologies that will change these boys’ lives forever!  I, as Captain of Team Tristan and the T1 Destroyers, ask you to please join us in this fight to find a cure.  How awesome it would be to see all of those Boy Scouts supporting not only the cause but also their fellow T1D scouts!

JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes

COPE CAMPOUT SIGN UP: Sign up for the September COPE Campout is LIVE and on the website.  Join the Troop as we tackle the Team Building obstacle course at Camp Attebury!  We will also have WEBELOS joining us this month to see if Troop 199 is the Troop for them.  Let’s be a positive role model in Boy Scouting.

TROOP MEETING: Tuesday 7pm at the Ministry Center.

CLASS A UNIFORMS: Full Class A Uniforms are back! Please be wearing your Troop 199 Necker, Slide, Scout Shirt, Belt, Scout Pants/Shorts and Socks.  Troop 199 is a Full Uniform Troop and wearing it is required to participate in Troop Activities.  Thank you for your cooperation.

PLANNING CONFERENCE:  The Troop 199 Scouts are the ones who select our monthly campouts, service projects, fundraisers and meeting plans.  In a few short weeks our current PLC will be attending our Annual Planning Conference to build a camping calendar for 2015.  ALL SCOUTS HAVE A VOICE, starting this week during Patrol Time the Patrol Leader will ask for ideas about places to camp or activities to do.  All ideas will be discussed at the Planning Conference so bring some good ones!!!

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS:  Attached is a sheet of those Scouts needing a Position of Responsibility for RANK.  If they have a POR listed then they are fine (Asst. Patrol Leader does NOT count towards rank).  We have several positions open with the Newsletter (Historian).  We need 4-6 Scouts to continue our Troop Newsletter.  It has been called one of the best in the Council (that’s over 4000 Troops/Packs/Crews).  If no Scouts step forward the Newsletter will stop being produced.  We need Scouts to write articles, tell jokes, draw cartoons, take pictures, make crosswords, work on publishing it and vote on articles to send to Council for publication in their Newsletter.  Please step up and help.  And earn credit towards your next rank.

SAFE HAVEN: Scouting is supposed to be a Safe Haven for all our Scouts.  Troop 199 works very hard on this.  Some Scouts might not think they are being mean, but one Scout’s “joke” can cause another Scout pain.  If you or your Scout feels otherwise or witness something that calls that into question please contact me or our Committee Chair immediately.  This is not being a snitch or a tattle tail, this is helping our Troop remain a Safe Haven for all.  Thank you for your continued assistance in making our Troop a special place.

As always visit the website at www.troop199.org for more information!
